It looks spectacular: the floodplains are full and in several places the water already reaches the dikes. “These are the real old Dutch pictures,” says dike director Jeroen Haan of the Stichtse Rijnlanden Water Board (HDSR). The packed dike at Salmsteke, flooded cellars and sandbags along the water: the high water has kept people busy in recent days. Yet water boards are not very concerned about the high water level. “The water can rise much higher before it really causes problems.”
