Recycling the Christmas tree is becoming more and more common, and now a fishery conservation area association in Molkom has taken it a step further. They collect Christmas trees and sink them into Borssjön.
– It will be very good playgrounds, rearing environments and protection for the fishermen, says Nils Cider, treasurer of Borssjön’s fishing area association in Nyhetsmorgon.
Christmas has barely passed before it’s time to start thinking about throwing out the Christmas tree. But the big question is what to do with the Christmas tree, how do you recycle it in the best way? Borssjön’s fishing area association has the answer to that. They collect the organic Christmas trees from Molkom municipality.
– We reuse them in the best possible way – below the surface, says Nils Cider, treasurer of Borssjön’s fishing area association in Nyhetsmorgon.
They drill holes in the ice in Lake Borssjön, hammer down lines into the bottom and then tie these together with degradable string and thus create a barrier. Inside the barrier, they stock up on Christmas trees which, when the spring sun comes, will be allowed to sink to the bottom. At the same time, he also believes that it is important that it takes place in an orderly manner.
Several effects of the intervention
The reason for doing this is because it has two effects. One is a purely practical effect as it benefits fish life for the next five or so years to come.
– There will be very good playgrounds, growing environments and protection for the fish and other animal life below the surface, says Nils Cider.
The second is that the association hopes to inspire and engage others to make a similar commitment to life on the bottom of the sea instead of them being thrown somewhere where they are of no use.
