WoW is collapsing on Twitch because the coolest project has to take a break – that’s what’s behind it

In recent weeks, the venerable MMORPG World of Warcraft has been on a roll on Twitch. It’s stopped for now. We explain what this is all about.

What kind of high was that on Twitch?

  • WoW is actually not a big game on Twitch, except when there is a “world first race” for a new raid boss in WoW Retail.
  • But in the last few weeks there has been an unusually large increase in WoW on Twitch and it came from WoW Classic: in the last 90 days the game had twice as many viewer hours as in the previous 90 days.
  • This was partly due to the World First race in WoW Retail, but even after that was over, interest remained high. This was due to a special project: “OnlyFangs” at WoW Classic Hardcore.
  • Anyone who raids on a hardcore server must be a bit crazy:

WoW Classic: The hardcore servers are here!

What kind of project was that? “OnlyFangs is a raid guild in WoW Classic Hardcore on the server “Ragnaros” that consists of major Twitch streamers. The special appeal: Anyone who dies here is thrown out. And people sometimes get killed during a raid in WoW.

The guild and raid are led by the popular sodapoppin, who reached 7.6 million viewer hours in the last 90 days, almost as many as raid leader Maximum.

Other big Twitch streamers like Mizkif and Annie Fuchsia were also there at OnlyFangs – and they welcomed people who aren’t otherwise known for WoW, like Pokimane or CohhCarnage.

You can see that Sodapoppin is serious about the project when he kicked a whole bunch of “big names” out of the guild at the end of November because he thought they didn’t play WoW Classic enough and were inactive.

    Viewing hours plummet by 51%

This is what happened now: WoW’s soaring began to stall on December 16th and then fell significantly from December 20th. Since then, the top streamer Sodapoppin has no longer been on the air with WoW, and many other big streamers are also missing:

A stroke of fate leads to a break in the WoW project

Why is that? As Twitch streamer Mizkif explains, “OnlyFangs” is currently on pause. The father of Veibae, Sodapoppin’s partner, has died and so the guild leader, Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris, has taken a break from streaming.

As Mizkif explains, WoW won’t be played without Sodapoppin and is putting the whole project on hold for now:

“No, WoW is not over, but Chance is missing. Chance will…Chance won’t be there for a while, he’ll be gone for a while. Yeah, that’s pretty sad shit.”

Mizkif thinks “the WoW stuff” will now take a break for a few weeks, without the raid leader. Because without a chance the guild will not be continued.
