Now selling at a bargain price in the Steam Sale

The action role-playing game Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is currently available on Steam for €30. This is a low price in the Steam Winter Sale. Fans of the game spend hundreds of hours with the mix of strategy and role-playing games; Bannerlord is currently being further developed and receives regular patches. Christmas 2023 is probably the ideal time to take a look at the game, which has been unfairly overlooked by many, says MeinMMO author Schuhmann.

What kind of game is this?

  • “Bannerlord” is essentially something like a mercenary simulation: you are the leader of a clan in a fantasy land that is reminiscent of our Middle Ages. You hire companions and soldiers, fight battles, solve quests, trade and advance your and your dynasty’s rise in this world.
  • Bannerlord entered Early Access in 2020 and had a huge Early Access launch in 2020 with 250,000 concurrent players. Even today there is still an average of almost 19,000 players online – this is a testament to the long-term motivation of the game.
  • Bannerlord only has a score of 77% on Metacritic – but it is one of the few players where the user score of 81% is higher than the critics’ opinion.

Why should you get it now? Bannerlord is currently available on Steam for €30. This is a historic low price – the game has only been this cheap once before, in the Summer Sale 2023.

Normally you pay €50 for it, or €35 if there is a discount.

Many people with 200 hours in the game are still excited

What stands out in the reviews? The reviews on Steam make it clear how much time you can spend with Bannerlord: Many of the people who recommend the game on Steam have spent 200 or more hours with the epic. Thanks to mods in particular, the game has what it takes to become a long-running favorite:

  • A player with 211 hours writes: “I just opened the game, suddenly it was 2 hours later.”
  • A player with 252 hours writes: “Do you remember when your army captured me and extorted my coins, and afterward I executed every ruler of your empire, and you were the last one standing? What happened now? Oh, that makes your head roll.”
  • A player with 260 hours writes: “I can safely say that this game is simply fascinating. The open world, tactical combat and character development provide hours of fun.”
  • Bannerlord had its hype far too early and is suffering from early access

Why isn’t the game more famous if it’s such a hit? Bannerlord is one of the games that suffered from early access:

  • The vast majority of players on Steam had it at a much too early stage in April 2020
  • When it later got polished and got really good, it never came close to reaching that level of hype again – around its release, in October 2022, it peaked at just under 60,000 people
  • The rise from a common man to a warlord is motivating

What is the appeal? Bannerlord gives you the satisfying feeling of actually making something of a world and playing a role.

You start with a few foot soldiers and are barely able to hold a sword yourself. But after 20 or 30 minutes you quickly become a competent mercenary who moves around with 20 people, hunting down smaller gangs of robbers and doing trade.

After 4.5 hours you suddenly command 60 men, have infantry, archers and cavalry and some personal subordinates who fulfill special functions in your clan: you start to think bigger.

Ultimately, you conquer your own castles, play a central role in the political struggle for power, wear shining armor, ride a noble steed and split heads left and right of fools who dare to cross your path.

As you can see, this progression motivates and keeps players engaged for hundreds of hours.
