Iranian Major General Razi Moussavi has been killed in an Israeli airstrike in Syria, reports the state-run Iranian news agency Irna.

He is said to have been in a suburb of Damascus when the attack was carried out. British-based opposition SOHR says Israel attacked positions used by Iranian groups and the Shiite Iran-backed movement Hezbollah.

Moussavi is described by Irna as one of “the most experienced advisers” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces in Syria. He was there to provide logistical support to groups that Iran supports, according to Irna. According to al-Jazeera, he was responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran.

The major general is said to have been a close associate of General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in an American drone attack in Baghdad almost four years ago.

Neither Syria nor Israel have commented on the data. But Israel rarely comments on attacks in Syria, but since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, and more intensively since Israel’s war against Hamas broke out in October, has carried out hundreds of strikes against targets in the country.
