This is how the gun crime laws will be tightened

2024 will begin with several changes: tougher penalties, lower taxes and cheaper diesel are some of the things that will become a reality next year. One of the tougher penalties will apply to firearms and explosives. In the bill from the Ministry of Justice, it can be read that this is for the purpose of “highlighting the seriousness” of crimes that include shootings and explosions.

The laws that will change are the laws on the punishments for the more serious forms of weapons offences, breaches of the license obligation for explosive goods, arms smuggling and smuggling of explosive goods.

The minimum sentence for serious weapons offenses is doubled

In 2023, the minimum sentence for serious weapons offenses was two years in prison. This sentence is doubled and will be 4 years from January 1, 2024. The maximum sentence for aggravated weapons offenses is increased from four to seven years. At the same time, the penalty for standard-degree crimes is increased from imprisonment for three years to imprisonment for five years.

Previously, crimes categorized as “extremely serious” carried a minimum sentence of four years in prison and a maximum of seven years in prison. From the start of 2024, these types of crimes will be punishable by a minimum of six years in prison and a maximum of ten years.
