The possibility to apply for a driver’s license loan was introduced on 1 September 2018. The loan was originally aimed at unemployed people aged 18 – 47, as the aim was to increase the opportunities for these groups to enter the labor market. According to CSN, borrowers with driving licenses are also more often employed than those without.
– For these borrowers, the driver’s license and the driver’s license loan have probably been important for their employment, says the analyst Hanna Rösth in a press release from CSN.
Several changes will begin in 2024. One of these is that the possibility of applying for a driver’s license loan at CSN will disappear.
The loan has been taken out by 18,200 people
Since the loan was introduced, 18,200 people have taken it. On 21 December 2023, the government decided to withdraw the possibility of applying for a driver’s license loan. This will take effect on January 1. The reason is that interest in driving license loans has fallen since it was introduced. The government also does not consider that the loan contributed to increasing the “employability” of the targeted target groups.
– Furthermore, evaluations show that the loan did not lead to strengthening the borrowers in the labor market in the way that was intended, says the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Andreas Carlson in a press release from the Government Office.
