MMORPG player struggles with an absurdly difficult goal for 3 years, achieves it, tells everyone how stupid that was

A player of the MMORPG Oldschool RuneScape has set himself an extremely arduous task, made even more difficult by a handicap: he sat on the Sisyphean task for three years and now he complains about his suffering.

What did the games plan to do?

  • The player wanted to get an untrimmed Herblore Cape in OldSchool RuneScape’s Ultimate Ironman mode.
  • Translated, this means: He had to level the skill “Herblore” (herbology) to the maximum of 99 without first playing another skill to the maximum level.
  • And he did that under extremely strict conditions: Because in “Ultimate Ironman” you have nothing in old school RuneScape: you can’t trade, you can’t even put items in the bank, but you’re limited to 28 inventory slots.

Like shoveling 2 tons of sand with your eyelashes

Why is this so difficult? The skill “Herblore” is considered the most difficult skill to level up in Ultimate Ironman due to the limited inventory space – and the player wanted this skill to be the first and only thing at 99, which made it even harder because it was in the had to limit methods he could use to level up Herblore. Because you would actually mix potions to level the skill efficiently.

The website “Gamesradar” compares the grind to what it’s like to shovel two tons of sand using just your eyelashes.

The player detailed (via Reddit) what he had to do to achieve his goal: A key part was to kill 150,000 to 300,000 Chaos Druids. He wasn’t sure about the exact number; his tracker broke at some point.

How long did it take in the end? At the end of the grind it took him 3 years.

Did he regret it? He says he doesn’t regret the grind. It was “really interesting”. Because it’s not a grind where you just sit in a room and press the same button 500,000 times.

It is a “complicated series of interwoven systems.” He learned a lot about OldSchool RuneScape.

At some points he thought he would give up and never make it, but then he distracted himself with another grind and then went back to work fresh.

“It was fun in a weird way. Would I recommend it to others? “No, unless you’re a bit of a masochist.”

He says he always thought about leaving it alone, but then all the time he would have sunk into the task would have been in vain. And that wouldn’t work either.

OldSchool RuneScape always appears in stories where players really invest an incredible amount of time in certain tasks:

Player puts 19,100 hours and 8 years into MMORPG – has to justify that he is not a “loser”.
