The term of cosmology refers to the branch of astrophysics which is concerned with the origin, nature, structure and evolution of the universe taken as a whole.
Cosmology and general relativity
The Newtonian physics being unable to describe the universe as a whole, cosmology has recourse to the general relativity. Albert Einstein was one of the first to publish a cosmological model modern. His model was rather inconsistent with reality since it described a homogeneous, finite and static universe. However, he had the merit of introducing the principle according to which the universe is spatially homogeneous, causing Man to lose his privileged place within celestial mechanics.

The standard model of cosmology
More recent cosmological theories are based on the principle of the expansion of the universe and on the physical properties of the material that composes it. The model of the ekpyrotic cosmology claims, for example, that the big Bang would in fact be the result of the collision of two universes.
