The rejection of the reform of the European Stability Mechanism, the ESM, is mainly due to the hostile position of the deputies of the two far-right parties in government, Fratelli d’Italia and the League, who believe that the Italian Parliament would not have no longer a sufficiently important role in the economic and financial choices of the MES Governing Council. While the elected officials of Forza Italia abstained.
On the opposition side, with the exception of the deputies of the 5 Star Movement who opted for abstention, the others voted for the ratification of the reform which they consider necessary so as not to put the country on the margins of the ‘Europe.
For its part, the Meloni government has indicated that the refusal of ratification can be an opportunity to begin reflection, at European level, to avoid the implementation of austerity programs.
But the fact is that Italy is blocking the new financial parachute for failing European banks, since it also needs its green light for the reform to come into force.
