Many dog owners want to spend as much time as possible with their pet and are ready to take many measures to increase the dog’s lifespan and quality of life. However, a dog breed has a median lifespan of just four years.
Several dog breeds are at a higher risk of dying before the age of 7. Some of these are the French Bulldog, Border Collie and Bernese Mountain Dog. For these dog breeds, cancer and problems with the locomotor system are the most common causes of death. One press release from Agria Djurförsäkring shows that the dog with the lowest median lifespan rarely dies of health problems – the most common cause of death is being hit by a car, train or other vehicle.
The Pomeranian dog breed has the shortest lifespan – due to collisions
– Here there are opportunities for dog owners to save their dog with simple means such as keeping it leashed and not letting it loose near busy roads, says the chief veterinarian Lotta Moller in the press release.
It is the Pomeranian dog breed that often lives in urban environments. With its median lifespan of 4.4 years, it takes the place of the shortest-lived dog breed. For those who own a small Pomeranian, it is therefore especially important to keep it connected outdoors.
