The ending is still legendary today

When Seven came into theaters in 1995 the test audience was not convinced by the ending and the studio’s expectations of scoring a hit aren’t all that great, but more on that later. Nevertheless, the serial killer film was a complete success and counts to this day one of the best films of all time. What makes Seven so special is the mixture of thriller and horror, paired with a spectacular ending that would later be followed by many other films.

Under the direction of director David Fincher, Seven became mastered in 4K for the first time and appears on December 31, 2024. The film can already be pre-ordered on Amazon. The extensive Collector’s Edition contains a lot of bonus material.

The Collector’s Edition has a lot of extras.

Seven started despite the star cast with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as Underdog at the box office. But the longer it ran, the more people wanted to see it, which may have been due to the legendary ending and the absolutely disturbing scenes, which until then were rather unusual for a thriller. In total, Seven grossed $328 million worldwide eleven times its production costs (via The Numbers).

The legendary ending of Seven almost didn’t happen

As Entertainment Weekly reports in an article that contains spoilers, test audiences were unconvinced by the film’s ending and the studio discussed possible alternatives. But luckily they decided to stick with the original script by Andrew Kevin Walker the perfect ending that fit the tone of the film and the characters.

Fans will know that at the end of the film, Brad Pitt screams, “What’s in the box?” A simple sentence that is repeatedly referenced in various films, series and memes, so that it now has cult status. And anyone who has passed Seven by so far should really find out what’s in the box.
