A woman in her 80s is acquitted of charges of causing the death of another after a fatal accident in a parking lot in Växjö in March, Smålandsposten reports.
The now freed woman was going to reverse, but instead drove forward and hit a 75-year-old woman who died. A child was also hit, but escaped without serious injuries.
The prosecutor believes that the driver had missed putting the automatic transmission in reverse gear and instead gassed forward. The woman, in turn, says that she accidentally accessed the electric car’s cruise control, which can be activated with a button on the steering wheel – an explanation that the court considers not inconceivable.
The woman is acquitted of all criminal charges, including negligence in traffic.
