Barbie became a huge hit in the cinema this year and broke records. Until the current version, the film had to go through countless script ideas, casting considerations and directors before Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made it a success. Also Anna Hathaway was once supposed to play the toy doll – and is now glad she didn’t.

As Deadline reported, Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) remembered the year in the podcast Happy Sad Confused (from minute 34). 2017. Back then, a Barbie movie had already been in the planning stages for eight years and was still six years away. After the planned and failed variant with Amy Schumer Anne Hathaway is being considered for the lead role in Barbie, directed by Alethea Jones pulled. In the end, this version did not materialize.

But looking back, is the Interstellar actress sad about the missed opportunity? Under no circumstances:

Anne Hathaway emphasizes that her Barbie film would have been different than the current one (which is now available to stream on Amazon). This one is “the best possible version” and has also changed the film world, which is why the actress also celebrates it:

And the legendary giants that they have with this [Barbie-]films have kept certain narratives present that have prevented other opportunities from developing.

And further:

As a moviegoer and woman in Hollywood since childhood I am excited about this development! […] So it’s easy to be happy for them. I love seeing women succeed! […] I think this will probably make everything better!
