Turkey issues international arrest warrant after fatal accident

Turkey has issued an international arrest warrant for the son of Somalia’s president.

He is suspected of being responsible for a fatal accident after hitting a motorcycle courier in Istanbul.

– The fact that the suspect has left the country only adds to the family’s pain, writes Istanbul’s mayor on X.

It was on November 30 that a car drove straight over a motorcycle courier in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul.

According to the police report, it was clear that Mohammed Hassan Cheikh Mohamud was the driver of the car, which in turn belongs to the Somali consulate in Turkey, reports BBC.

The driver of the motorcycle delivery, a man in his 40s, was seriously injured in the collision and taken to hospital. Six days later, the man died from his injuries.

Initially, the bid was considered to be responsible for the accident and the president’s son was therefore released on the condition that he would not leave the country until the investigation was fully completed.

Got suspected again

After studying the surveillance footage from the accident, it has been concluded that there could possibly be another explanation for the accident and Mohamud therefore became a suspect again.

But when police visited his home, they discovered he hadn’t been there for at least a week. He is now believed to have left the country.

Muhamud is the son of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who has yet to comment on the incident.

Wanted internationally

Turkey has therefore issued an international arrest warrant against him in the hope that he will comply with the legal process.

Over the past decade, Turkey and Somalia have had growing diplomatic relations, with Turkey investing in both infrastructure, military training and humanitarian aid in the country at the far end of the Horn of Africa.
