The new President of Argentina, Javier Milei, who won the second round of the presidential election held on November 19 in Argentina, was sworn in. While the oath ceremony was held at the National Congress in the capital Buenos Aires, Milei received the presidential sash and cane from the previous President Alberto Fernandez. Milei, who took over the duty, addressed the public in the Congress garden.
ADDRESSED TO THE PUBLIC
“Today is the beginning of a new era for Argentina. Today we are closing a long, sad period of collapse and decline. We are embarking on the path of reconstruction of our country. Argentines have overwhelmingly expressed their desire for irreversible change,” Milei said.
Milei said, “The outgoing government left us on the path to hyperinflation. We will do our best to prevent such a disaster from happening,” and warned that inflation could reach 15 thousand percent annually if it is not controlled, and promised to “fight tooth and nail” to eliminate it.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by King VI of Spain. Important names such as Felipe, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro attended.
Milei, known for her love of dogs, stopped her convoy while passing from the congress to the presidential palace Casa Rosada after the oath ceremony, got out of her vehicle and petted an ownerless dog.
HE SAID THAT HE WOULD CLOSE THE CENTRAL BANK
Milei, 53, an economist and former television commentator, stated that he wanted to close the Central Bank of Argentina and promised to fix the country’s economy.
Milei’s promise to make the US dollar the official currency of the country garnered great support from the public, but many economic experts stated that this would lead to an economic disaster. In Argentina, where the annual inflation rate approaches 200 percent, two out of five people live below the poverty line.
