The idea comes from India, where most millet is grown in the whole world, 12 million tons. But it is not even a tenth of the rice harvest and the goal is to increase production, because compared to rice and wheat, millet does not need artificial irrigation or pesticides and is better able to cope with climate change.
It used to be common to grow millet in India and now the government is trying to get more farmers to return to the crop.
But where it now turns out that even millet has difficulty coping with increasingly extreme weather.
