Why is the A27 being widened?
A 47 kilometer stretch of asphalt on the A27 will be widened. This concerns the kilometers between Houten and Hooipolder (North Brabant). Rijkswaterstaat hopes this will ultimately ensure better traffic flow and therefore fewer traffic jams. Work in the Brabant section will start in 2024. It is expected that the Utrecht parts of this route will also be completed by mid-2025. For example, 4 lanes will be added between Houten and Everdingen, and the Hagestein bridge will be replaced by 2 new bridges.
The entire project will not be completed until 2031, according to spokesperson Eric van Beerendonk. “That sounds long, but a lot needs to be done. For example, first moving cables and pipes and designing the new bridges. And we don’t want to completely close those kilometers of road for years. The store will remain open during the renovation.”
