Health authorities are warning about an insecticide used against bedbugs and cockroaches even though it has no longer been intended for household use since 2013. The “Sniper” contains an active substance classified as fatal by inhalation and toxic by contact with the skin or by ingestion.
In a report published on December 5, 2023, ANSES and the Poison Control Centers (CAP) warned the French against a dangerous insecticide: the product Sniper 1000 EC DDVP.
An insecticide banned in France since 2013
To fight against pests, including bedbugs – which have become public enemy number 1 – many French people resort to insecticides.
The Sniper is one of the bombs used. Except that it would contain dichlorvos, a product for household use banned in France since 2013.
“This active substance from the organophosphate family is classified as fatal by inhalation and toxic by contact with the skin or by ingestion., recalls Anses in a press release. This one “can in particular cause asthmatic respiratory symptoms, ocular symptoms and neurological disorders which can lead to loss of consciousness and cause a skin allergy.“
Serious side effects, unknown to the majority, which do not prevent Sniper from being sold on markets or in bazaars, in particular under the names SNIPER 1000 EC DDVP® or SHOOTER 1000 EC DDVP®.
This bomb is also easily found over the counter on the Internet and on social networks.
In fact, the number of poisonings is exploding in France.
“Poison Control Centers recorded 170 events linked to the product SNIPER 1000 EC DDVP® over the period from January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023. In total, 206 people were exposed over this period.“, specifies the press release.
While most of the poisonings were mild, nearly 10% were of medium severity and 5.5% of severe severity, including 3 deaths (accidental or due to ingestion with suicidal intent).
Controls are increasing
To try to stem this massive exposure, the DGCCRF is tightening the screw: many bottles have been seized and a recall campaign is relayed on the site ReminderConso since November 8, 2023.
Online offer announcements have also been removed.
Bedbugs: what is the right attitude to adopt?
Spraying chemicals in your apartment is obviously not recommended.
“Physical control (mechanical and thermal) should be favored as a first intention over chemical control.“, recalls ANSES.
If the infestation persists, it is subsequently recommended “to contact a professional specializing in pest control, with a Certibiocide certificate controlled by the Ministry of Ecological Transition”.
An advisor from the Departmental Housing Information Agency (ADIL) can also help you; the latter can be reached at the following number (0806 706 806).
Finally, practical advice and information are available on the page “Bedbugs” from the website of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, on the section “Bedbugs ? The State supports you” as well as on the site Stop bedbugs from the website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
