A few days ago it was still an insider tip. However, since the weekend at the latest, word has gotten around that the new Godzilla film an absolute cracker is. And no, we’re not talking about a spin-off from the MonsterVerse, which will continue in cinemas next year with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The Japanese production Godzilla Minus One from Toho has been conquering the big screen since the beginning of December. Although the film can only be seen in select venues, it has one within a very short time sparked huge hype and even surpassed one of the best blockbusters of the year: Oppenheimer.

On the film database IMDb, Oppenheimer currently has an average rating of 8.4 out of 10 points. Godzilla Minus One was able to easily exceed this value at launch. The angry giant lizard is currently emerging 8.5 out of 10 points. There’s only one film from the 2023 blockbuster vintage that you can’t ignore.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the best blockbuster of 2023 registered at IMDb with 8.7 out of 10 points. We’ll be curious to see whether Godzilla Minus One reaches this value in the next few days put in the shade can. However, the more people see the film, the more difficult this project will become.
As a rule, average ratings go down as soon as a larger number of ratings arrive after the initial hype reactions. Only 9,400 IMDb members have rated Godzilla Minus One so far. For comparison: Oppenheimer and Spider-Man have around 530,000 and 310,000 respectively. This is definitely a different house number. Godzi may even fall behind Oppie again.
