At least three people died and seven people were injured in a bomb attack on a Catholic mass in the city of Marawi in Mindanao province in the Philippines on Sunday.
Marawi on Mindanao, in the southern parts of the island nation, is the country’s largest Muslim-dominated city.
The attack took place during an ongoing fair in a premises on the grounds of the University of Mindanao, according to regional police chief Allan Nobleza.
– We are investigating whether it was a homemade bomb that exploded or whether it was a hand grenade that was thrown in, says Nobleza.
The management of the university condemns the act and expresses full support for the Christian population of the city and all those affected by the act.
The killing follows an incident this week in which the Philippine military struck and killed eleven, according to the military, Islamists of an organization called Dawlah-Islamiyah in Mindanao with an airstrike. The police chief states that they are investigating whether there is any connection between the raid and the bombing.
