It’s building up to a real heavyweight encounter.
In one corner of the ring, an Atlantic low pressure. In the second, a Siberian high pressure. And the arena for everything: Sweden.
– Depending on who wins, it can get really cold, says Mika Rantanen at the Meteorological Institute in Finland.
A severe cold snap is taking hold of Sweden and according to the forecast, cold can turn into colder at the end of next week.
The reason is an Atlantic low pressure from the west that can be met by Siberian cold from the east. And the two weather systems happen to meet right over Sweden.
– If you look at the map, you will see that Sweden is in the middle between these two weather systems. It can end with extreme cold or milder weather and rain, says Mika Rantanen at the Meteorological Institute of Finland.
Coldest November in years
The month of November was the coldest November in Sweden in 13 years. At the same time, temperatures in the rest of the world have generally been above normal.
– Just because it is cold in one’s own garden does not mean that global warming is not happening elsewhere on earth. It is important to remember now that we are entering a cold period in the Nordics, says Mika Rantanen.
Already at the beginning of the week, it can be good to pick out the extra warm fleece sweater, gloves and hat.
Because regardless of whether the mild low pressure or the freezing high pressure wins the weather fight this weekend, the prevailing snow pack will stay until Friday, according to Mika Rantanen’s forecast.
– The Siberian cold can lower the temperatures even more. You can expect around 20 minus degrees locally unless the Atlantic low pressure wins, says Mika Rantanen.
So will be the first advent
But before the heavyweight meeting, stable winter weather is expected this weekend.
– A ridge of high pressure continues to provide stable and cold weather in large parts of the country, but snow flurries remain in parts of the Baltic Sea landscape until Saturday. During Saturday, there are many who can enjoy a little December sun during the day. SMHI has a yellow warning for Uppland for the snowfall from Friday to Sunday with another 5 to 15 centimeters of fresh snow.
And there is also cold winter weather and snow expected until the first Advent on Sunday.
– During the first advent, new snow flurries also drive in along the Norrland coast and the cloudiness increases, but at the same time remains stable and clear in many places in the south and over our western landscapes, says Lars Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart.
