PSG frustrated by Newcastle postpones its qualification until later

PSG tried, Newcastle resisted. At the Parc des Princes, Paris was frustrated by Newcastle (1-1) despite a clear domination. The Parisians saved the point from a draw thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappé at the very end of the match from a penalty and keep their destiny in hand for the last match of the group stage against Dortmund.

3 mins

In the first leg, PSG left Newcastle slightly humiliated. This Tuesday, November 28, after the return match of Group F of the Champions League between the two clubs, the capital’s players were completely frustrated (1-1). First by their opponents in the evening, capable of resisting for a long time by defending very low, then by their own clumsiness, which cost them an automatic qualification for the round of 16.

Paris had however started strong, stronger than the Magpies. From the outset in the opposing camp, the players from the capital created several clear opportunities at the start of the game, like the off-target recovery from Fabian Ruiz (4th), or Kylian Mbappé who, on a backheel after a cross from Achraf Hakimi, came up against an excellent Nick Pope.

It was ultimately PSG itself that betrayed itself. Or rather his goalkeeper. Already author of a risky pass which offered a huge opportunity to Alexander Isak in the heart of the first act, Gianluigi Donnarumma poorly repelled a strike from Almiron which he should have caught, directly at the feet of the Swedish striker. The latter did not need to be asked to open the scoring (24th).

A one-sided second period

A goal which did not change the appearance of the match. Well, yes, Luis Enrique’s men continued to dominate the debates, more intensely as the minutes ticked by. A few meters from the line, sometimes at point blank range, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé and Kylian Mbappé successively came up against a miraculous Nick Pope or missed the target in a rather incomprehensible way.

Lacking total success, it was ultimately the VAR which came to the rescue of the Parisians in the eight minutes of additional time granted by the refereeing body. A hand from Livramento after a cross from Dembélé forced Szymon Marciniak, the evening referee not always kind to the French champions, to indicate the penalty spot. It was ultimately Mbappé who delivered the Parc des Princes without trembling. Fortunately for Paris, which, with this point in the draw, keeps its destiny in its hands: it will have to win in Dortmund to ensure qualification and first place in the group on December 13.
