“It’s an incredible loss”

A year since Börje Salming passed away.
Then older brother Stig Salming remembers their best moments together.
– To socialize in such a way, it is clear that it has been nice, he tells Sportbibeln.

Yes, today is exactly one year ago Börje Salming tragically passed away from the effects of ALS. Börje died surrounded by his family at home in Stockholm, he was 71 years old.

Salming’s struggle

It has been a very tough two years for Börje’s older brother, also a former hockey player Stig Salming. A little more than a year before Börje died, Stig’s wife also passed away Lena away. They were married for 55 years. And shortly after Börje died, their mother died Karin95 years old.

In a span of 14 months, Stig Salming lost three very important people to him.
– It’s empty, of course. First of all, it is two years back that my wife passed away. It’s an incredible loss to sit alone, I’m allowed to say that. At the same time that Börje passed away far too early as well. My wife passed away aged 71 and the same with Börje, aged 71. So it… it’s hard.
– Then just when it lands in these reminders, it becomes even more tangible of course. And then my mother passed away a year ago, it was basically only a month between Börje and my mother passing away. So there are three people in a short time who have disappeared from my life, and of course it’s a very empty space, that’s how it is, Stig tells Sportbibeln.

Best Börje memory

Stig can still remember the best moments he has had together with little brother Börje.
– The best memory I have with Börje is probably the first year when we played completely properly together in Brynäs. It is probably the memory that I have that really stands out, when we then joined together in Brynäs and played for three seasons. But the very first year there when we formed a back pair and managed to establish ourselves in a good way, I have that as a strong memory, says Stig.

The 76-year-old also brings up another cherished memory.
– Of course also the last time with Börje. I’ve been lucky enough to go with Börje, and we’ve been away in different constellations, to Toronto and watched matches, the last ten years on different occasions. It has been very nice and pleasant to spend time together in that way. To hang out in such a way for several days in a row, it is clear that it has been nice.
