Scholz urges Putin to end conflict

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Wednesday that he had urged Vladimir Putin to stop aggression against Ukraine, during the first online G20 in which the Russian president participated since the start of the war. “I called on him to withdraw his troops from the territory of Ukraine so that this war finally ends,” declared the German leader, during a press conference in Berlin with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Vladimir Putin’s participation in this G20 was “a good opportunity” to clearly state how to restore peace in Ukraine: “It is Russia that attacked Ukraine and to easily restore peace, it is enough for Russia to withdraw its troops,” he said.

The crisis between Finland and Russia took a further step on Wednesday with Helsinki’s decision to keep only one border crossing open with its neighbor which it accuses of orchestrating a migration crisis. Since the beginning of August, around 700 asylum seekers have entered Finland without a visa via the border with Russia, which is more than 1,300 kilometers long, according to Finnish authorities.

“The government decided today to close new border posts. Only the Raja-Jooseppi post will remain open,” Petteri Orpo said at a press conference.

Russian authorities announced Thursday that they had strengthened security measures in the Murmansk region (Northwest). “It was decided to implement in the Murmansk region the high alert regime and a number of additional measures aimed at ensuring the safety of our residents,” regional governor Andrei Chibis said on Telegram.
