A 41-year-old man has been arrested by Spanish police near Barcelona on suspicion of particularly serious drug smuggling and particularly serious drug crime in Sweden.

According to the prosecutor, it concerns a former Malmö resident who is suspected of being involved in serious organized crime.

– I mean that this crime took place within the framework of criminal networks, and it is a person who has been interesting to the police for many years, says prosecutor Lisa Åberg to TT.

But she emphasizes:

– He is connected to organized crime in my opinion, but he is not, as I see it, part of any of the deadly conflicts going on in Sweden now.

The man, who previously lived in Malmö, has been requested to be extradited to Sweden. He was arrested on Tuesday after he was arrested the same day in his absence in Sweden.

– He was detained in his absence yesterday at 9:30 and arrested an hour later, near Barcelona. We have had close cooperation with the Spanish authorities regarding this arrest, says Lisa Åberg, who does not want to go into more detail about the circumstances surrounding the criminal suspicions.

According to the prosecutor, a handover procedure can take between two and three months.
