Police are offering advice to help deter the theft of vehicles, particularly a trend involving relay and reprogramming technology.

Newer model, high-end vehicles with keyless entry and push-button-start technology are often the target of criminals using this method.

Police say suspects will use the relay technology to locate the signal from a key fob inside the vehicle owner’s home, amplify and transfer the signal to unlock, start, and drive off with the vehicle.

Police say these types of thefts usually occur during overnight hours and the owner isn’t aware of the theft until the next morning.

Reprogramming is carried out by a suspect gaining entry to a vehicle and using an electronic device plugged into diagnostics port. Using this method, the thief can program a blank key fob to steal the vehicle.

While not all vehicle thefts occur in this manner, the following steps can be taken to reduce the chances of your vehicle being stolen:

– Park your vehicle in a garage that is secure and locked.

– Purchase a device that blocks access to the onboard diagnostic port.

– Use a steering wheel locking device.

– Put your key fobs inside a radio frequency shielding pouch or bag inside your home to block cell signals to prevent the use of relay technology.

– Install a GPS tracking device on your vehicle to help police locate it and/or the suspects.

– Know where your keys are at all times, and never leave them unattended or in your vehicle.

– Don’t leave your vehicle unattended while it’s running.

– Lock your vehicle at all times.

– Make copies of ownership and insurance slips.

– Install a surveillance system at your home to capture suspicious activity.
