US forces have fired at two targets in Iraq, US military central command Centcom says in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“The shelling was a direct response to the Iran-backed attacks against US and coalition forces,” the post reads.
The two attacks come a day after several Iran-backed militiamen were killed in a US airstrike on Iraqi soil.
Wednesday’s air raid targeted two facilities south of Baghdad, a Pentagon source said.
The air raids of the last few days mean that the United States has now for the first time announced that it has struck the Iranian regime’s representative in Iraq, and has since attacked Tehran-linked targets in Syria on three occasions in recent weeks.
The number of attacks against American forces in the region has increased due to the war between Israel and Hamas.
