– A basic prerequisite for Swedish migration policy is that people conform to prevailing norms and live in an orderly and honorable manner. The way of life of foreigners needs to be given greater importance for the right to stay in Sweden, says Malmer Stenergard.
Residence permits need to be revoked in more cases, says the migration minister.
The investigation will look at three areas: Tightened requirements for an honorable way of life, the possibility of revoking residence permits in more cases and ensuring that the relevant authorities have access to more information.
Example of lack of behavior
If a person has committed a crime abroad, it must affect the residence permit. But it doesn’t stop there – the investigation must take a broad look at which ways of life can provide grounds for revoking a residence permit.
– It could be benefit fraud or debts to the public or individuals, says Gender Equality and Deputy Labor Market Minister Paulina Brandberg (L).
– In the same way, it must also be about association with criminal actors.
At today’s press conference, the government and SD use the term “honest way of life”, instead of the term “lack of character”.
What happens to the right of expression?
– If you express values that are very, very foreign to Sweden, then it is something that you would think could be taken into account, says Ludvig Aspling (SD).
Migration Minister Malmer Stenergard chimes in:
– It’s not about censorship of people who stay here, because people who stay here have freedom of speech. But on the other hand, it is the case that only Swedish citizens have an unconditional right to stay in the country, and how one acts and expresses oneself can then indirectly have consequences in the form of reaching the degree that we then believe should form the basis in order to be allowed to leave the country.
It is stated in the Tidö Agreement
In the Tidö Agreement, the government and SD agreed to investigate the possibility of deporting a foreign citizen due to “lack of character”.
“Improper behavior refers to conditions such as lack of compliance with rules, association with a criminal organization, network or clan, prostitution, abuse, participation in violent or extremist 38 organizations or environments that threaten fundamental Swedish values, or if there are otherwise unequivocally established remarks regarding the way of life ”, it says in the Tidö Agreement.
– The concept of prostitution is not in the directives, but then it is an honest livelihood, says the migration minister.
The press meeting was attended by Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, Gender Equality and Deputy Labor Market Minister Paulina Brandberg (L), Ludvig Aspling (SD) and Torsten Elofsson (KD).
As a special investigator, the government has appointed Robert Schött, former lawyer in Sundsvall’s district court. The assignment must be reported no later than January 15, 2025.
