Stockholmers are too good at parking.
So far this year, 45 million less than expected has rolled into Stockholm city’s wrong parking account – now the traffic office’s Christmas party is cancelled.
– This year has been very tough for my administration, says traffic councilor Lars Strömgren (MP) to Mitt i.
Fewer and fewer parking fines are issued in Stockholm. During the period from January to October, the city expected to generate almost SEK 334 million through incorrect parking fees. The actual amount was only SEK 289 million, reports say Middle of.
That is 34 million less compared to the same period last year – and results in a deficit of 45 million kroner in the city’s budget. The reason is believed to be that more and more people are using parking apps.
– If you need to extend your parking, you get a notice today, so there are fewer people who don’t remember how long they have paid for, says traffic councilor Lars Strömgren (MP) to Mitt i.
Gloomy forecast for the rest of the year
The forecast for the rest of the year does not look better. In total, a deficit of 100 million is expected compared to the city’s budget.
The tough economic situation is also a reason behind the drastic reduction, Strömgren believes. People are more reluctant than before to risk unnecessary fines. Something that affected “this whole system”, says Lars Strömgren to the newspaper.
But strained finances have not only been seen in Stockholm’s residents. The traffic office has also struggled with keeping a budget – and has implemented several major savings. Among other things for an annual tradition.
– We have not added new positions when people have quit or retired. There will also be no Christmas party for the traffic office.
“Can compensate”
Starting next year, the fee for residential parking in Stockholm will be increased from SEK 1,100 to SEK 1,600 per month. The traffic office hopes that it will even out the drivers’ duty of care.
– Possibly, it can compensate for the smaller amount in terms of budget, says Lars Strömgren.
