The Last of Us Part II Remastered Official Announcement

The team at Naughty Dog is excited to announce The Last of Us Part II Remastered, the definitive way to experience the sequel to the critically acclaimed The Last of Us, which was first released in 2020. We’re also excited to confirm that you won’t have to wait long for this; Players can jump into Ellie and Abby’s emotional journey on the PlayStation 5 console on January 19, 2024.

Whether you’ve already played and platinum The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 4, or you’ve just started The Last of Us Part I on PS5 and want to continue the story, Part II Remastered is a great treat for new and returning players from our studio. It will give them plenty of reasons to revisit a story that means something. The gripping campaign returns with technological improvements, new modes, and new behind-the-scenes features that will deepen your understanding of the creation of Part II. Before we reveal what’s in store, take a look at our announcement trailer below.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is designed to allow you to delve deeper into both its development and mechanics. Chief among these is a brand new mode called No Return, a roguelike survival mode designed to let players prove their mettle in random encounters and experience The Last of Us Part II’s combat in a new way.

The mode features a host of playable characters to choose from – some of whom are playable for the first time in The Last of Us series (which you may have seen in our trailer) – each with their own characteristics to suit different play styles. Players will chart their own route with each run, choosing between a variety of stealth and combat encounters that will pit you against a range of enemies and unique twists that can add new, unexpected factors to any encounter.

Each run will offer a new chance to decide what rewards you’ll receive after each encounter, how you’ll define your character, and more. Unlock more characters, skins and more as you progress through the mode, customize your own runs and compete on a global leaderboard as part of the Daily Run(2). We’re excited to share more information about No Return as we get closer to launch.

For those of you who have played The Last of Us Part II, we know that the parts featuring a playable guitar are a favorite for many, and you budding rockstars have impressed us with your performances. That’s why we’ve introduced a new Guitar Free Play mode that lets you strum the strings of a range of unlockable instruments, use audio FX pedals to modulate your performance, and play as different characters in a variety of in-game locations to customize the mood and feel of your set.

For players new and old alike who want to learn more, we designed Part II Remastered to provide a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at how our studio brought this game to life. The new Lost Levels set in Part II Remastered offers players a unique chance to check out some playable sequences previously cut from the game. These aren’t fully finished levels, but rather early development slices that not only let you see new looks at Part II’s world, but also feature embedded developer commentary to provide richer context. Explore these areas and hear the objectives of each level directly from the team – this is a unique addition for our studio and we’re excited to let players take a look at the creative process.
