Russia fired a missile at a military base near Lviv, Ukraine, on Sunday morning. Data on the number of dead and wounded vary.

According to the governor of the Lviv region, 35 people were killed and 134 wounded in the attack.

According to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, foreign military advisers are also working at the Javoriv base.

Javoriv is a small garrison town less than 20 kilometers from the Polish border and a few tens of kilometers northwest of Lviv. Russia, so close to the NATO border, has not been hit by this war before.

‘s special editor on site

‘s special editor Mika Mäkeläinen was on a Sunday morning on his way to Javoriv. He said he saw dozens of ambulances on the road. They ran in both directions.

– In three quarters, there have been 27 ambulances on alert. In addition, there were just over a dozen ambulances on the roadside just a moment ago. Several ambulances have also passed our car in the direction of the base, Mäkeläinen says.

A little later, Mäkeläinen posted a video on the road on Twitter:

Mäkeläinen also said that he had negotiated with the soldiers at the roadblock to get to the scene of the missile strike.

According to the soldiers, a “hellish” sight awaits at the base. A soldier at the roadblock said at least 15 people had died in the attack.

The base trains foreign fighters

The base north of Javoriv has trained peacekeepers for international missions, among other things.

According to Mäkeläinen, now during the war, foreign volunteers are being trained at the base. They have also left for Ukraine from Finland.

In addition, Western weapons aid appears to have been stored at the base.

Mäkeläinen says that on the night between Saturday and Sunday, Russia has also carried out free strikes elsewhere, for example at Ivano-Frankivsk airport in the western part of Ukraine.

– Russia has apparently now moved from words to deeds and is trying to prevent foreign aid from arriving in Ukraine, Mäkeläinen says.

Russia has also previously struck the Lutsk airport northeast of Lviv.
