New law in Denmark – lowered age limit for wine and spirits

More and more Danish 15-year-olds drink alcohol every day.
Now it will be harder to get hold of for young people in Denmark – but only of the stronger kind.
– We must be a society where 16- and 17-year-olds can buy a beer, says Minister of Health Sophie Løhde.

The Danish health authority has proposed a ban on people under the age of 18 buying alcohol. But the Danish government did not want to go that far – when they jointly presented a new prevention plan aimed at children and young people’s consumption of tobacco, nicotine and alcohol.

At 11.30 a press conference was held.

– We have to listen to the Danish health authority’s recommendations, but we also have to remember what it’s like to be young. Hitting them in the head with new rules will not help, said Monika Rubin, Member of Parliament for the Moderates during the press conference.

Alcohol consumption by young people “super scary”

The new regulations are an agreement between the government and the parties SF, the Danish Democrats, the Conservative People’s Party and the Alternative, writes danish DR.

Monika Rubin describes the Danish youth’s alcohol consumption as “super scary”. But at the same time, the age limit will not be raised. Instead, the permitted alcohol content for 16- and 17-year-olds is lowered.

“Says no to wine and spirits”

It will now not be possible for people under the age of 18 to buy anything with an alcohol content above six percent. Previously, the limit was 16.5 percent.

– We want to be a society where 16- and 17-year-olds can buy a beer. But we say no to wine and spirits, says Minister of Health Sophie Løhde (V).
