Chucky is a horror icon, but more of a secondary figure. A few years ago a serial killer doll series came out. MeinMMO author Niko Hernes started the first episode and was looking forward to middle-class trash. But he was surprised: the series is really good.
Who is Chucky the killer doll?
For the series you don’t need any prior knowledge of the films, you should know what Chucky is. However, you can also enjoy the series without it. If you have seen the films, you can expect a lot of love and respect for the over 30 year old film series. This is also because the creator of Chucky, Don Mancini, is involved in the series.
I like trash films and series. Especially in the horror sector, they are often incredibly entertaining and have qualities that you wouldn’t expect. And that’s how I started the first season of Chucky – but I got little trash, but a surprising amount of quality.
Soon you will be able to play the red-haired dwarf yourself:
Be careful, the new killer in Dead by Daylight is small but so mean
From the nursery to the high school
Jake Wheeler is interested in art and retro stuff. At a flea market he finds a doll with red hair that he wants to use for an art project. It happens as it has to, and the doll is Chucky, who now interferes in the sad life of Jake Wheeler.
At the beginning of the series, Chucky initially takes on the role of an evil devil on his shoulder. He wants to make Jake commit murder. Chucky quickly becomes involved in the chaos of high school.
The story at school is quite cliched and generic. Chucky murdering and giving Jake tips creates a very comedic atmosphere. Especially because most of the students are incredibly unpleasant.
The series deals with classic high school clichés by using a murderous doll to show how ridiculous it all actually is.
Chucky’s loose mouth is the star, which gives the generic context the right flavor and actually kept me entertained every episode. But the big, unexpected highlight for me is the action and the kills.
A well-crafted series
Everything so far sounds like a fun trash guarantee, but what completely surprised me is how valuable the series looks. If you look at Chucky superficially, the series looks pretty good. Although there is the use of CGI, the star of the series is moved and played by puppeteers.
The way he moves and the way it’s staged really makes him seem like a doll moving through voodoo. The voice of Chucky is Brad Dourif, who has been voicing him since the original. Only in the terrible 2019 reboot is Chucky voiced by Mark Hamil.
The combination of puppeteers and voice is a real feast, especially in the murder and fight scenes. Chucky is small, but that means he can move differently than other killers. For example, he moves under chairs or disguises himself as a simple doll.
The kills themselves are bloody and well crafted to look at. Thanks to Chucky’s body, they are also quite creative and fun. It’s never really scary, but as an element in a horror-comedy these scenes work perfectly, but also never stray into silly territory.
For fans of the film series, the series offers an incredible number of recurring characters. These are not just visible in the background, but are central figures in the story. They are interpreted in a new and modern way, but the entire history of the Chucky series is treated with respect.
I love the series. Sure, the high school nonsense isn’t particularly exciting, but how Chucky deals with it is absolutely entertaining, and from the second season onwards we move to a more exciting place.
Anyone who enjoys high-quality kills and absurd stories about a murderous doll with a loose mouth will have the time of their life here. But if you expect real horror, you should go for series like this:
