The Segond fracture is a characteristic fracture of the tibial plateau.
It occurs following rotation of the tibia leading to rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. Its mechanism is that of a bone tearing (also called avulsion) when stretching the anterior cruciate ligament which usually ends up breaking. The fracture is located on the outer edge of the plateau. Its consolidation occurs naturally. On the other hand, the anterior cruciate ligament may require intervention.
