Frölunda’s decision has attracted great criticism from the supporters.
Now vice-captain Nicklas Lasu strikes back with full force.
“I have seen all the comments and it hurts me,” he writes in a statement.
There has been a lot of chatter lately. Frölunda’s decision to retire the club profile Christian Bäckmans jersey number 5.
Criticism of Frölunda
When the decision was announced, the SHL team was met with great criticism from its own supporters on social media. They believed that his work for the club was not great enough and that there were other names that should have gone before Bäckman.

Frölunda’s number 5 played a full eleven seasons in Gothenburg and the defender played 581 matches in the club shirt, with the SM gold in 2004/05 being the greatest merit. Now Bäckman will become the eighth Frölunda player to have his jersey hoisted to the roof of the Scandinavium on January 27.
Lasu fights back
But after the harsh criticism, the vice-captain is now stepping down Nicklas Lasu out and strikes back against inappropriate fan behavior.
“I have seen all the comments about Bäckis and it hurts me to read. Unworthy of him. Joel and Bäckis are two of the players who have meant the most to me personally. In addition to his credentials, his leadership qualities still live on in our dressing room,” he writes in a statement on social media, see it below.

Lasu is now appealing to the club’s own supporters to show respect, see his post below.
“So please all fans. Stop comparing all the great players we’ve had at the club. ALL have been important to our association. Of course the 5 will go up to the roof,” he writes and gets approval.
“Opinions on right/wrong about the 5 going up aside – love that! Good, Lasu!”, writes the supporter profile Niclas Norlindh on X (formerly Twitter).
“Sad that it turned out that way, bad for Frölunda and really sad for Bäckman,” writes another supporter.
