The Swedish national team’s nice gesture – to pay tribute to the Brussels victims: “It’s hugely important”

The terrorist act in Brussels, when two Swedish football supporters were killed, took a toll on the national team’s leaders and players.
– We will now follow up with the players about what happened, says union captain Janne Andersson.

Sweden will honor the victims of the Brussels attack in connection with the final European Championship qualifying matches away to Azerbaijan and at home to Estonia.
– It feels enormously important. Exactly what needs to be done is on someone else’s table, but doing something feels very important. We feel we want to honor their memory, says Jan Andersson when he presented the squad for his final international matches.

The national team captain says that he himself talked to the players, but also that the national team’s sports psychology advisor Daniel Ekvall been in contact with the players to offer support and help.
– Somehow we will talk about it and then try to put it behind us as best we can. But then it will be included during the collection in view of mourning bands and manifestation. But in some way we must process it together, says Andersson.

Before the European Championship qualifier against Belgium on October 16, two Swedish football supporters were killed just because they were Swedish and dressed in national team clothes. When the national teams found out about the incident, it was decided at half-time that the match would be called off at 1–1 (which was also the final score). Both the Swedish national team and the supporters had to stay for a long time in the arena before they were bussed from there to their hotels.
