Ten candidate countries for EU membership have, as every year, been scrutinized by the European Commission. These are six Balkan countries as well as Turkey and obviously the three countries whose candidacy was accepted in June 2022, four months after the Russian invasion: Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. It is especially Ukraine that Europeans are most looking forward to. But since Ursula von der Leyen’s surprise trip to Kiev last Saturday, the commission’s intention seems a foregone conclusion: this Wednesday it should recommend the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine.
