Spielberg always wanted one big cinema musical turn. With West Side Story he made that dream come true. For years he tried to bring his passion project to the screen. When the time finally came, however, the audience let him down. His remake of the musical classic flopped at the box office.

West Side Story takes you to 1950s New York, where two rival gangs are fighting for the Upper West Side. The Sharks, who immigrated from Puerto Rico, meet the Jets – and something happens in between unlikely love story. María (Rachel Zegler), the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo (David Alvarez), falls in love with Tony (Ansel Elgort), who is a member of the troubled Jets.

West Side Story is a timeless musical classic that was masterfully adapted for the cinema by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins in 1961. Spielberg pulls out all the stops in his version and delivers one of the best films of his entire career away. West Side Story 2021 is a thrilling rush of colors and movements that will take your breath away for two and a half hours.
The film is led by the great Rachel Zegler, who will soon be seen in the new Hunger Games film The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. West Side Story is also full of other things acting discoveries. You won’t be able to get Ariana DeBose as Anita, Bernardo’s fearless girlfriend, and Mike Faist as the tough yet vulnerable jet leader Riff in particular.

Despite all the talent in front of and behind the camera, Spielberg’s West Side Story was a flop at the cinema. With a budget of $100 million, the film only managed to gross $76 million worldwide.
