A national emergency has been declared by the central government in Somalia, where at least 14 people have died in the extreme weather that has destroyed homes, roads and bridges. Rescue efforts are underway to reach an estimated 2,400 people trapped by floods in Jubaland state in the southern parts of the country.
The heavy rain follows a four-year drought in the region.
In neighboring Kenya, the Red Cross states that the death toll has risen to 15 since the heavy rains began on Friday. The port city of Mombasa and the northeastern parts of the country have been worst hit.
Heavy rains and flooding have also been reported in the Somali region of Ethiopia, where thousands have been forced to flee their homes after houses and farmland were destroyed.
