In addition to the weather, there was another factor in our region that meant that the Northern Lights could not be seen in many places. “A disadvantage in Utrecht is that there is a lot of light at night, through lampposts and houses. This ensures that the sky is much more illuminated. This means you see the northern lights much less,” says de Koning. At the same time, the phenomenon often appears more spectacular in photos than in real life. “That’s because we have longer shutter speeds on cameras. This makes the colors much brighter.”
