Utrecht – The water quality of most ditches, fens, canals and ponds in the Netherlands is poor. Only 22 percent of the 3,200 small bodies of water tested are in order, according to Nature & Environment after citizen research. If waters score moderately or poorly, this is, for example, because there are too many fertilizers in the water, or because there are too few plants and aquatic animals.
