I’ve laughed at anime for years, but now I can’t get away from a series

MeinMMO author Dariusz Müller is actually very critical of anime, but now he has seen one whose story completely thrilled him.

I’m far from being an anime fan. However, I am inclined to watch some of the most popular series. This is mainly due to my general curiosity. For example, I also want to test games that I’m sure I won’t like. It could be that I will be surprised and then have a very nice time. The same applies to films and series and occasionally books.

So I started Cyberpunk: Edgerunners at the beginning of the year. Since I really like the game, this was the ideal introduction for me. Edgerunners was really good and I admitted to myself that I should catch up on some of the most hyped anime. As a Pokémon fan, I generally have nothing against animated series, but apart from Ash and Pikachu, the only thing that captivated me until Edgerunners was One Piece and The Journey of the Straw Hat Gang.

I recently took out a Crunchyroll subscription as a test and watched all the available episodes of Demon Slayer. That was also a great anime. I particularly enjoyed watching the animation style in the fights, but I also found many of the characters really well done.

And then came the anime that has completely captivated me over the last few days and made me think about the story for days after the last (available) episode: Attack on Titan.

What is the series about?

Attack on Titan is a manga and an anime series based on it, which is called “Shingeki no Kyojin” in the original Japanese and was created by Hajime Isayama.

Attack on Titan tells the story of Eren Jaeger and his friends Armin and Mikasa, whose lives take place within three great walls that surround the human kingdom. Outside the walls live man-eating Titans, these are huge creatures. Already at the beginning of the anime, some Titans overcome the walls of the kingdom, destroy Eren’s home and eat his mother.

Eren vows to take revenge on the beasts, but that doesn’t mean that the anime is only about fighting wild creatures. Attack on Titan hides an exciting story with sometimes unexpected twists.

Why am I so intrigued by Attack on Titan?

Even though Attack on Titan is very brutal in its presentation and can give the impression to non-viewers that it is just about stupid fights against huge man-eating creatures, it is above all the complexity of the story that captivated me.

As the series progresses, we learn more and more about the backgrounds and motivations of the individual characters and are surprised again and again by sometimes unexpected twists. Attack on Titan regularly reveals new information that gives the plot a new, significantly more political direction.

MeinMMO demon and anime expert Cortyn writes about Attack on Titan that the series is developing into a political thriller “that is reminiscent of the best times of “Game of Thrones” and in which many a hero ultimately emerges as a villain.”

I can completely agree with this description. In particular, the development of the main character in the final season as well as some previously resolved plot twists ensure that I want to hear or read the thoughts of other viewers in forums and on YouTube after finishing the last available episode.

It’s not for nothing that Attack on Titan is one of Cortyn’s 5 series with which you can seduce your friends into anime.

Bonus praise for the music

Attack on Titan gets special praise from me for the music, because it is really well chosen. Not only does it fit the series perfectly and reflect the plot of the respective season, it is also musically on a high level in my opinion and is fun to listen to.

The two titles by the band “SiM” in particular ended up in my playlist just as quickly as the samurai songs from Cyberpunk 2077.
