MW3 Promotes Stunning Campaign, But Players Are Disappointed “Poorly written. No voltage”

Those who pre-ordered were able to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 now and before its release, but only the campaign. MW2 left a cliffhanger that MW3 was supposed to resolve, but players are left disappointed after the story ends.

What is the story about? We’re keeping the part as spoiler-free as possible so that you can still enjoy the campaign after our contribution. Basically, MW3’s campaign docks with MW2’s. Makarov, a villain that many fans should probably remember from 2009, returns. At that time he committed a massacre at an airport, even detonated an atomic bomb and should now be woven into the new story threads of MW3 (2023).

With cinematics and a new soundtrack, he once again takes on the role of villain and causes problems. So you have to stop him and stop him.

Despite Makarov’s ruthless side, fans are disappointed with the campaign because it is not only too short, but also feels like a €70 filler.

Players describe campaign as too expensive filler

What do players think of the campaign? Not very much, to be honest. The problem starts with the duration of the campaign. According to YouTubers who played through the campaign live, their journey took around 3-4 hours. That’s half as long as its predecessor. But that’s not all.

After fans played through the story, they described the plot as “poorly written” and that it offered “no suspense.” YouTuber TheGamingRevolution described how he felt about the story on X (formerly Twitter):

I just finished the Modern Warfare 3 campaign and it was incredibly poorly written. No voltage. No stakes. Everything just felt like pointless filler. […] . No originality, nothing new.

Makarov was the only interesting thing, and he only showed up in the middle and was barely there.

The ending felt like it was designed for its own sake. Comparing this to the original Modern Warfare trilogy, it’s crazy how many emotional and amazing moments those games had, and this new trilogy tries to replicate that, although it doesn’t seem nearly as impactful. […]

But there are also complaints about the campaign in general on Reddit. It’s apparently so unimpressive that you shouldn’t bother remembering any of it:

  • “[…] There are no things to remember and the game even sets up interesting missions and then lets you play the character doing the less interesting things. (The game portrays you as being a sniper covering your team twice, and then immediately lets you play another character.) […] I didn’t expect much, but at least something.” – RareBk
  • “It was supposed to be an expansion DLC. Which explains most of it. The reason it’s a complete game is because MW2 is so bad that they (Activision) are still in damage control mode. […]“ – snorlz
  • “My roommate did it in 4 hours. I did a speedrun and finished it in just over 2 hours. Hardened difficulty level. Not only is it short, it’s crap. Terrible story, lazy, lazy mission design. Do not buy. […]“ – blacksun9
  • When is the release of MW3? The release of CoD: MW3 is on November 10th and with it the multiplayer mode and the zombie mode will be introduced. How these will turn out is not yet known. Not much will change apart from some changes in PvP and Zombie mode will be a mix of DMZ, open world and zombies. It remains to be seen how MW3 will cope with the full release.
