Watch out on the roads – SMHI warns of heavy snowfall and strong winds in southern and central Norrland. It is expected to lead to poor accessibility on the roads and canceled departures for flights and trains.
– It is not time to go out on the roads in these areas, says TV4 Nyheternas meteorologist Ingrid Eronn.
10-35 centimeters of snow is expected in Jämtland, Västerbotten, along the southern Norrland coast and northwestern Dalarna during Friday evening. In some places it can snow even more.
– There may be three decimetres of snow. If you are now going somewhere and have to drive, you should do so carefully. If you are already in the snow areas and are going to drive south, you can wait until Sunday when you will hopefully have time to plough, says meteorologist Ingrid Eronn.
The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds means poor access on the roads. SMHI also warns of canceled departures for buses, trains and flights. It is also expected to affect the airborne electricity grid and the telecommunications network in the affected areas.
Red warning for high flows
On Saturday, SMHI issued a red warning in Gävleborg county due to high water flows after snowmelt and torrential rain. The red warning remains until Monday.
– The ground is very saturated so there is no place for this rain to go. The red warning applies from midnight on the night of Saturday, says Ingrid Eronn.
Gale over the Baltic Sea
It is also expected to blow a gale, 14-17 meters per second, over the Baltic Sea at the height of Karlskrona all the way up to Umeå. The yellow gale warning has been issued for both Friday and Saturday.
– There is a gale warning along the entire east coast. The winds are not extreme in themselves, but it is the combination with the snow that causes poor visibility and that the snow can lay unevenly.
