Linda Sembrant finally saved a point for Sweden against Italy. A heavy loss of points in the hunt for the Olympic place in the Nations League group topped by Spain.
“Of course it feels heavy”
Sweden has participated in every Olympics since the first on the women’s side in soccer in 1996, but now looks set to miss the championship in Paris next year.
– Of course it feels heavy. Now we probably don’t have it in our own hands but have to hope for other results and that’s always sad, says Magdalena Eriksson to SVT Sport after the match.
Nathalie Björn agrees:
– They (the Olympic chances) are still there but significantly more difficult. Now it is no longer in our hands. Now Spain really have to lose or drop points so it will be tough.
“Very important point”
Zecira Musovic chooses, despite the precarious situation, to see the situation in a different light.
– First of all, we have to stick to the fact that it is an extremely important point. It’s head-to-head meetings that count, if Italy had won this match it would have been a tricky situation. Not only for the Olympics, but also for remaining in Group A (of the Nations League).
Nannskog rules out the chance
Although the players keep their hopes up for the Olympics, SVT’s expert Daniel Nannskog does not see it as possible.
– I would say that it is done. Now Sweden needs to rely on Italy beating Spain, then Sweden must also beat Spain. And with the performance tonight, I can’t see it happening, says Daniel Nannskog.
