Part 4 would have destroyed the sci-fi series

On Netflix and on WOW * you can currently watch all three parts of the big one Science fiction series The Destiny see that was canceled before the last film. On Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant The fourth and final part should actually be called Ascendant consequences. But nothing came of it.

Sci-Fi series without a conclusion on Netflix: We will never see Destiny 4

In the mid-2010s, the Divergent films were a sci-fi phenomenon that became the next big young adult book series after Twilight and Hunger Games. But the final fourth film was never made. After the strong grosses of the first two films, Divergent and Insurgent, with $288 million and $297 million worldwide, the third part flopped Allegiant with a decline to 179 million (via Box Office Mojo).

Unlike the Maze Runner trilogy, the Divergent series was based on the Mockingjay model and shared the last volume of Veronica Roth’s book trilogy. So the creatives were suddenly faced with the problem of creating a conclusion with less money, which ultimately led to the plan to end the series on TV.

However, leading actress Shailene Woodley then dropped out by not renewing her contract. Box office analyst Jeff Bock said that the Division of the final “complete destruction of the brand” guided have. Because neither a TV film nor the Divergent ending as a series that had been planned in the meantime came about. The belief that the sci-fi series would be a success gradually collapsed. Today, seven years later, no one is talking about a sequel anymore.

The Divergent series actually has a good sci-fi ending for a long time

The story of Divergent started with one really exciting starting idea: Teen Tris (Shailene Woodley) lives in a dystopian future Chicago, where teenagers divided into five factions according to their character traits are divided into: Abnegation, Ferox, Ken, Candor and Amite. According to these social castes, they served the society as selfless, fearless, learned, outspoken and friendly members. But Tris has an affinity for more than one personality trait and as she faces her fears, first in simulations and later in reality, the system begins to crumble.

In part 2, the factionless come into greater focus and in part 3, Tris and her friend Four/Tobias (Theo James) discover that their entire society is part of an externally controlled genome experiment was. At the end of the film Allegiant, Tris enlightens the Chicagoans about her status as guinea pigs and, with the help of her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort), reveals to them the real world behind the fence surrounding their city.

So at the end there is one Liberation strike from outside control. And this is actually a very satisfying ending for the entire series. If it weren’t for this nagging knowledge about a planned fourth film.

The destiny at Netflix: Why the book ending would have only hurt the film finale of the Divergent series

Failed film adaptations of major young adult book series are a dime a dozen. That the films of The Destiny only have three parts left a The last closing strip was missing, which sounds dramatic at first. But although as a passionate reader I am usually one of the first to mourn unfinished works, things are different with Divergent. Because the book ending to Allegiant is absolutely terrible.

But in summary, this is what happens (Warning, spoilers for the novel’s finale): A memory serum that villain David (Jeff Daniels) wants to unleash on Chicago to continue the experiment is instead used against himself. He loses his memory and can no longer be prosecuted for his actions.

The most shocking thing, however, is this Death of main character Tris at the end of the novel The Determination – Final Decision (that’s what the book is called on the German market). She sacrifices herself for the community, whereupon Four, in desperation, almost decides to take the serum of oblivion as well. Despite the liberation of Chicago at the end, Tris’ martyrdom hangs as a dark cloud over the victory. This story decision doesn’t make sense from a narrative perspective. More like the defiant gesture of an author who wants to prove that she dares to have a more blatant ending than others (e.g. JK Rowling with Harry Potter).

Nobody questions that the third film Allegiant is the weakest in the cinema series. But I hated the third book even more. In this respect it is Divergent’s cancellation was secretly the best thing that could have happened to the sci-fi series as an ending.
