Halloween is a highlight for many children. But what day is it that they will knock on the door? And we adults should be ready with the candy? The expert Jonas RosenqvistPhD in ethnology at Umeå University, explains this in an interview with Mom.
Tradition says that Halloween should be celebrated on October 31st. In 2023, October 31 falls on a Tuesday and it clashes with the Swedish concept of Saturday sweets. Therefore, Saturday 28 October will be the date closest to Halloween.

But there are also several Swedes who believe that the children should go trick-or-treating on the Friday before All Saints’ Day, writes Mama. Then it is the third of November that applies.
– Then it was a weekend for Halloween and a weekend for All Saints, and then it got really confusing. Even today, people don’t really know when Halloween is. Now it’s two weekends and a week that you celebrate Halloween, says Jonas Rosenqvist to Mama.
What day should the children go trick or treating?
Jonas Rosenqvist tells Mama that there is actually no right answer. It’s about planning and hearing around locally where you live.
– I think that even if there are different rules, it is as if some kind of regulatory framework has been developed around it.
