One of the best players of all time wants to change weapons after years as a top sniper

The e-athlete s1mple is one of the most successful players in the history of Counter-Strike. Now he takes a break and considers putting the AWP aside.

Who is the person you are talking about?

  • Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyljev has been active for the Natus Vincere (NaVi) team since 2016 and is considered one of the best Counter-Strike players of all time. Accordingly, he was named best player in 2018, 2021 and 2022.
  • The 26-year-old Ukrainian won several prestigious tournaments with NaVi, including the Intel Grand Slam in September 2021 and the PGL Major in Stockholm a few months later.
  • Before joining NaVi, s1mple played for HellRaisers, FlipSid3 Tactics and Team Liquid.
  • On the evening of October 26, 2023, s1mple announced on Twitter that he was taking a break – he had been planning to do this for a long time. He has to fix documents and take care of people in his life (via Twitter).

On top of that, the Ukrainian wrote that he had never thought about leaving NaVi and changing organizations, but was interested in looking at offers.

s1mple is considering putting the AWP aside

Will s1mple change weapons? In his post on Twitter, s1mple not only said he was open to offers from other teams. He also considered switching to a “rifle” in the future.

s1mple is best known as an AWP player and played this role brilliantly for NaVi for years. The rifles primarily mean the AK47 and the M4A1-s/M4A4 – i.e. fully automatic assault rifles.

Why does s1mple want to change weapons? s1mple did not give an exact reason. In his post on Twitter, the celebrated pro simply wrote that the AWP in the new game doesn’t feel as “impactful” as it does in CS:GO.

Some players feel that playing the AWP in CS2 feels frustrating. One of the biggest problems is the so-called “Peekers Advantage”, which makes maintaining an angle generally much more difficult than in CS:GO (via Reddit).

What is Peekers Advantage? Peekers Advantage means that the player who enters the shootout from cover has an advantage, while the player who maintains an angle is at a disadvantage. So if you aim at a corridor and your opponent suddenly comes running from the side into this corridor, then they have an advantage over you.

Peekers Advantage can have various reasons. For example, in the case of CS2, one player writes: “Most people think it’s due to poor interpolation settings or a subtick. But we don’t know for sure (via Reddit).”

We don’t know whether Peekers Advantage plays a role in s1mple’s consideration of switching weapons. But in the CS2 community this is definitely a factor that is discussed when playing the AWP.

Only time will tell whether s1mple actually replaces the AWP with an assault rifle after his break. The Ukrainian is currently not really satisfied with the condition of the CS:GO successor. Just recently, s1mple harshly criticized the tactical shooter and said you shouldn’t play CS2 yet.
