The main round of the 2023 World Championship is currently taking place in League of Legends and, as in recent years, the teams from South Korea and China are dominating the LoL Worlds. The third US team, Cloud9, has now been eliminated. This brings the streamer and crypto millionaire Tyler “Trainwreck” Nignam to the scene, who does not want to tolerate this situation in LoL.
Which team was eliminated?
Crypto millionaire complains about mother’s boy and participation certificates
This is what Trainwreck says: He complains about Cloud9 on Twitter. They have a “mama’s boy” mentality. This is all false optimism, a “participation certificate” attitude:
Until our players live, eat, and poop League, we’re not going to get anywhere.
According to Trainwreck, they were complacent and no one cared about the defeats. You don’t want to win at all: you need “hungry demons” to win and nothing else.
Is he right? No, that’s pretty commonplace talk, as if attitude and hard work can make up for everything. You can’t force yourself to win in LoL through sheer will.
Whether you win or lose depends a lot on the individual skill of the players, tactical decisions and the right read on the meta.
The defeat against Fnatic in a relatively close match certainly hurts because they are on a somewhat equal footing with Cloud9, but Cloud9 hardly had any realistic chances of winning against the teams from Asia anyway.
Actually, Cloud9 performed exactly as expected before the tournament: no one expected them to suddenly eliminate Faker and T1. But apparently Trainwreck sees this as a lack of will to win.
This is how it is discussed: People are joking on Twitter about whether Trainwreck, known as a sports betting enthusiast, would have put money on the game.
But some take Trainwreck seriously and hope that the crypto millionaire will take the courage to buy a US team and invest a lot of money.
This is what lies behind it: From a German perspective, Trainwreck’s statement is reminiscent of the recent debate in Germany to abolish winner’s certificates at federal youth games. The discussion was then seen as a symbol of the fact that Germany lacked “bite” and needed more competition and fight.
From a more general perspective, the statement is also reminiscent of discussions among football fans whose team is losing ground. But in LoL you can’t “kick anyone off” and thereby increase your chances of winning.
